Today Russell County Stockyard offers a wide range of conveniences in a modern environment. It is much different today than when the Loy Brothers, Autic, Arvis, and Jimmy along with their sons, Jeffrey, Darrell, and Jeron became co-owners of the Russell County Stockyard in 1989. They leased the old Russell County Stockyard, located on Lakeway Drive in Russell Springs, Ky from the stockholders of the Veterans Fairground. While this location had served the community well in the past, the growing business quickly outgrew the old yard.
With only space for approximately 800 cattle, the old yard couldn't accommodate the increasing number of cattle received each week. Without running water or indoor plumbing, a new building site was soon chosen. The new location would be home to a state of the art facility, offering the much needed amenities for the comfort of both the livestock and the patrons.
The Loys purchased a 28 acre tract located just south of the Cumberland Parkway off of Hwy 127 in Russell Springs, Ky. Construction began in 1994 on the new building which would cover over 80,000 sq feet and include a theater style seating for 250 in the sales area, real time computerized sales information, a buyers lounge, and a full service restaurant with a home-style menu. The new stockyard was designed to accommodate up to 3,000 head of cattle, nearly 4 times more than the previous facility. With the new location there have been other changes as well. In addition to the Wednesday cattle sale, there is also a cow sale the 1st Friday of every month, and a goat sale every Saturday.
